The bigoted question Canada’s media keeps asking about Sikhs — and only about Sikhs

Mukhbir Singh: All Canadians have the right, responsibility and privilege to engage politically and serve their communities without having this right questioned on the basis of their race, religion and gender

A few short months ago, Sikhs in Canada grappled with media coverage rife with unfounded claims of “Sikh extremism” in Canada following the controversy during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to India. At the time, some commentators posed a question that would have caused a massive uproar had “Sikh” been replaced with “women,” “Indigenous people” or “Blacks,” by asking the question: “are Sikhs over-represented in Canadian politics”?

All Canadians — Sikhs, women, Indigenous, black, LGBTQ — have the right, responsibility and privilege to engage politically and serve their communities without having this right questioned on the basis of their race, religion and gender.

For 50 years after their arrival on Canadian soil, Sikhs did not have the right to vote and no representation in government, making even the most basic and mundane of tasks — owning or even renting a house, going out in public without verbal attacks or physical violence, a challenge. There was rarely a politician to help or speak out on behalf of the community.

In the early 1900s, senior government officials came up with a scheme to expel the entirety of Canada’s Sikh population to the British Honduras (now Belize).

Incoming migrants from Asia, including Sikhs who had the same status as Canadians as subjects of the British empire, were required to possess $200 — an inconceivable amount — while European migrants were only required to have $20 in their possession.

Sikhs and Canadians defended the line, shoulder to shoulder as brothers in arms, while the Canadian government and public was instituting racist policies

In 1914, a boatload of Sikhs entered British Columbia via the “continuous passage” journey, which required a direct journey to Canada from India, and were still refused entry. After months of living on the boat, the 376 Sikhs were forced to return to India, resulting in the deaths of many of these Sikh men.

While this was happening, Sikhs from the same families and villages as the men on the Komagata Maru were shedding blood in key battles in the First World War, including, the battles of second Ypres, Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, Cambrai and beyond. Sikh soldiers were reinforcing a weakened Canadian division on Flanders Fields as the first gas attack was illegally used by the German forces. Sikhs and Canadians defended the line, shoulder to shoulder as brothers in arms, while the Canadian government and public was instituting racist policies.

Sikhs joined the Canadian and British forces even as they faced racist policies and while they protested discriminatory treatment through the efforts of Teja Singh and Hari Singh, who presented their case on the restrictions of South Asian migration in England. Average South Asian community members took to the streets in order to publicly protest their conditions and tried to create change through petitions to the Canadian, British and Indian governments.

Activism is an important tool to achieve change and work for positive outcomes. In democratic countries, we have the privilege to carry that activism forward by being involved in the process of governing and challenging and changing the unfairness and inequality in our political systems.

Sikhs believe strongly in the principles of service and creating positive change for everyone in society. An important way to do that is through politics.

In 1993, the first Sikh was elected to the House of Commons. In 2015, a record 16 members of the Sikh community became MPs, and four were named to cabinet. In 2017, Jagmeet Singh became the first visible minority and Sikh to be elected as the leader of a major political party.

Some commentators have published opinion pieces that include warnings about an ethnic takeover of Canada

Such progress and such a Canadian success story should make Canadians proud, but there has been a backlash. A short reading of the comment sections on articles relating to Sikh politicians or the replies on Twitter shows that many Canadians are deeply resentful about what they see as a “takeover” of their country. Some commentators have published opinion pieces that include warnings about an ethnic takeover of Canada, claims that Sikhs in Canada are “over-represented” in politics and the suggestion that Sikhs, including NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, carry “blood hatreds” that they have brought with them to Canada. Among the mainstream media, there has been nary a voice condemning these examples of race-baiting.

The charge that Sikhs are over-represented has been particularly jarring. Such allegations feed the type of tribalism and communalism that we see consuming other places around the world.

What should be the right amount of representation? Is white over-representation the only acceptable form of over-representation in politics? Such allegations are a clear attempt to marginalize Canada’s Sikh community and seek to diminish their role in defending, building and contributing to this country.

Air India Flight 182 was an Air India flight operating on the TorontoMontrealLondonDelhi route. On 23 June 1985, the Boeing 747-237B serving the flight (c/n 21473/330, registration VT-EFO, Emperor Kanishka) was destroyed by a bomb at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400 m). It crashed into the Atlantic Ocean while in Irish airspace. It was the first bombing of a 747 jumbo jet, as well as the deadliest bombing of any aircraft in general, and the fifth-deadliest aviation disaster.

The incident was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, and the deadliest incident in the history of Air India. It was the deadliest terrorist attack involving an airplane until the September 11 attacks in 2001.[2] The bombing of Air India 182 occurred at the same time as the Narita Airport bombing. Investigators believe that the two plots were linked, and that those responsible were aiming for a double bombing. However, the bomb at Narita exploded before it could be loaded onto the plane.

Canadian law enforcement determined that the main suspects in the bombing were members of the Sikh militant group Babbar Khalsa. The attack is thought to have been a retaliation against India for Operation Blue Star, ordered by the Indian government, headed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Indian Army entered the premises of the Golden Temple to flush out Sikh militants from within that and the surrounding structures. Though a handful of members were arrested and tried for the Air India bombing, Inderjit Singh Reyat, a Canadian national, is the only person convicted in the case. Singh pleaded guilty in 2003 to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for building the bombs that exploded aboard Flight 182 and at Narita.[3]

The subsequent investigation and prosecution lasted almost twenty years. This was the most expensive trial in Canadian history, costing nearly C$130 million. The Governor General-in-Council in 2006 appointed the former Supreme Court Justice John Major to conduct a commission of inquiry. His report was completed and released on 17 June 2010. It concluded that a “cascading series of errors” by the government of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had allowed the terrorist attack to take place.[4]

I also understand India was placed under British rule for some time. And that Gandhi was assassinated for ‘good reasons.’ However, if anyone deserves an apology , would be a lot of people to whom the British Monarchy have not yet apologized in their hypocrisy in all the harm they have done. The Jewish people are always condemning those that are  Anti-Semitic” while they are themselves are the worse Anti-Semitic bunch of them all, caring  not for Jewish heritage but their own self serving selfishness.

The British are listed on the Google search engine as the worse and most violent people the earth has ever seen. They list them as #1; Not only this but it could be suggested the Jews own “everything” that is worth owning. Even worse is the “atrocious acts” they have been accused of doing while blaming others.

However, history is filled with genocidal tendencies by all ethnic groups throughout the pages of history. So blaming one an another over the other’s killing fields is useless. As everyone has attempted to wipe off various “religious” groups  in passing generations to take advantage of the earth. Consequently, perhaps we are due for peace at last, however short that will last.

This past month or so as I have been reading more on Canadian politics, the more I would want to leave Canada and go back on the road travelling, as this country finds itself very divisive and divided, so as not to be bothered with it all. Which explains when I go out into the public how relentlessly the canadian people are so sick and tired by these bullshitters. Liars and con artist.

It’s actually quite pathetic my friend.

You read about their positions in the morning newspaper telling us how to think and how to act, while they themselves are violently and ruthlessly trying to storm the castle. Being too weak and cowardly, do they “hire” people to do what they are too callously weak to do by their own hands, but fear not my good friend , Eternity in Hell is reserved just for them. And that won’t be too long a coming. As I can guarantee you that my publication has appeared in these “Last Days” so that people can be told what is coming down the pipes and I for one look forward with fear, trembling and courage that many hundreds of millions of people are going to perish violently in the coming months and years. And those that remain here will be given access to the fountain of youth.

Therefore, care not for ethnicity,  for we are all God’s children but then some are the devils children.

Now they’re planning the crime of the century
Well what would it be?
Read all about their schemes and adventuring
It’s well worth the fee
So roll up and see
As they rape the universe
How they’ve gone from bad to worse

Who are these men of lust, greed and glory?
Rip off the masks and let’s see
But that’s not right – oh no, what’s the story?
Look! There’s you and there’s me
(That can’t be right…) Supertramp
